Mixed Competitions
Terms of Competition Rules
1. Mixed Competitions Committee
1.1. At the beginning of each year, a Mixed Competitions Committee (MCC) will be appointed by the Women’s/Men’s committees. This committee will consist of at least 2 ordinary members, with a minimum of one member from each section, and they will have the authority to act as a Referee in all matters vis-à-vis mixed competitions.
1.2. The Rules of Golf as approved by R&A Rules Committee, in addition to local rules as made and published by the Women’s/Men’s Golf Committees, shall apply to all competitions.
1.3. The Mixed Competitions Committee may publish additional Terms of Competition or alter/waive any clause in these general rules for any mixed competition by prior notice to the membership.
1.4. If a member of the MCC is not readily available, the General Manager has the authority to act as Referee on their behalf. In either case, the decision of the Referee is final and binding.
1.5. The 2026 MCC are: Joyce Duffy and Michael Madden.
2. Mixed Competition Formats
2.1. Foursomes: The players on each team alternate hitting a single ball. Men tee off on the odd-numbered holes, while women tee off on the even-numbered holes. (While this is the case normally, if one or more holes are out of play, men tee off on the first hole in play and the players alternate the tee shots thereafter). After the tee shot, the teammates continue to alternate shots until the ball is holed out.
2.2. Greensomes (or “Scotch Foursomes”): Both players tee off, and the team selects the best shot. The next shot is taken by the player who didn't hit the selected tee shot. This alternate play continues until the hole is completed.
2.3. Fourball: Both players on each team play their own ball. The better score on each hole (lower net score in strokeplay, higher points in stableford) is taken as the team score for that hole.
2.4. Semi-Open Plus: Members may opt to invite a guest or play with a fellow member.
3. Eligibility
3.1. A mixed pair (team) shall comprise one male member and one female member. Only members of the Full, Associate and Young Adult membership categories may enter. However, a limited number of mixed competitions may be nominated to allow for participation by student members. [1]
3.2. To be eligible to win first prize in any mixed competition, both team members must have at least 12 qualifying scores in their Golf Ireland scoring record. With the sole exception of the Sol White Cup, to win first prize in any Semi-Open Plus mixed competition, both team members must also be Full, Young Adult or Associate Members or any combination of these categories.
3.3. A member may play in both a Men’s /Women’s competition and a Mixed Competition held on the same day without penalty.
3.4. The following events comprise the Mixed Competitions in EGC. More detailed information on each competition is given further below.

2a. Simon Jacobson Cup (Qualifier)
1) Format: Foursomes Strokes.
2) Each player must have at least 12 qualifying scores in their handicap record to enter.
3) Men tee off on the odd- numbered holes. Women tee off on the even-numbered holes. While this is the usual rule, it may need to be adjusted if one or more holes are out of play – in this case, the general rule to be followed is that men and women tee off on alternate holes, with men teeing off on the first hole in play.
4) Men play off white tees of the day.
5) Women play off red tees of the day.
6) 15 leading pairs qualify for matchplay plus the holders (i.e., last year’s winners) only if they enter the competition as a pair.
7) If the holders do not enter as a pair, then the 16 leading pairs qualify for the matchplay.
8) A random draw for the matchplay will take place shortly after the competition results are declared.
2b. Simon Jacobson Cup (Matchplay)
1) Format: Foursomes Matchplay.
2) Handicaps. Half the difference between the aggregate course handicaps of each team will apply, using current handicaps throughout.
3) Men’s Pars and Indices to be used.
4) Men tee off on the odd-numbered holes, starting at the first hole. Women tee off on the even-numbered holes. While this is the usual rule, it may need to be adjusted if one or more holes are out of play – in this case, the general rule to be followed is that men and women tee off on alternate holes, with men teeing off on the first hole in play.
5) Men play off fixed white posts. Women play off fixed red posts.
6) The MCC will post a play-by date for each round of matches. All matches must be decided by the ‘play-by’ date. No extensions will be granted, except in exceptional circumstances and only with the authority of the MCC.
7) Matches should be arranged as early as possible to avoid last-minute, unforeseen difficulties and all players are equally responsible for ensuring the result of the match is posted by the play-by date.
8) In the event of a match reaching no result after the stipulated holes and the competitors cannot agree on a tie-breaking method, the match must be decided by a sudden-death play-off starting at the 1st hole.
9) Results of matches should be posted by the winners on the computer.
10) If a match cannot be completed by the play-by date, then the MCC would expect that a concession should be afforded to the party(s) who offered most ‘play dates’ over the play-by period. If this cannot be agreed, then a ‘coin-toss’ should decide the winner.
In the event of a result not being posted by the play-by date, the MCC will disqualify both parties. However, the Committee can decide the tie in favour of one party if, by the play-by date, they are aware of reasons for doing so, e.g.
a) Injury to one of the parties
b) Non-availability of one of the parties over an extended period.
