The first at Edmondstown demands an accurate tee shot as the landing area is protected by trees and hedges left and right. A well-placed driver or long iron leaves a middle distance approach into a narrow green. Bigger hitters can try to cut the corner on this dogleg right to leave a short iron, but an inaccurate ball will be blocked by trees.

Once again accuracy is essential off the second tee as the fairway doglegs sharply left. Aim to the left to leave a shorter second, but a tee shot hit too far left will leave you in the trees. Bigger hitters may choose a long iron or rescue club. Once around the bend a short iron remains to a green that is well protected by bunkers short and trees everywhere else.

A medium iron will be enough for most golfers to reach this wide but narrow par 3 green. Don’t be short as two deep bunkers guard the entrance to the green. The trees on the right masking a right pin position coupled with the prevailing wind blowing from right to left, makes a difficult shot for right to left hitters.

The beginning of Edmondstown’s very own “Amen Corner”, the 4th is a long par 5 sweeping downhill from left to right. A tee shot pulled left could be out of play while to the right of the fairway is a long line of mature trees. Long drives or second shots from distance are in danger of hitting the fairway bunker halfway to the green. The green is guarded by the river Glin and bunkers at the front as well as a large bunker at the back. This narrow but wide green slopes from back to front so only a shot to the green avoids danger.

One of the toughest holes on the course, this long par 4 (par 5 for ladies) plays every bit of its 390+ meters (366 meters for ladies) especially into the prevailing wind. Drives need to be both accurate and long to hit this narrow fairway. This will leave a long iron or wood to a small green guarded by a pot bunker which catches shots hit short and right. A par here keeps even the best golfers happy.

The elevated tee yields a beautiful view of the green once pertched just in front of the river Glin. Longer drives can get caught by fairway bunkers both left and right. A long drive can leave a short shot to the green, but go wayward will leave a tricky mid range bunker shot. Balls over the back risk going into the river or leaving you with a very tricky uphill chip shot to a green sloping away from you.

Here is your chance to get one back after Amen Corner. This one is all about getting your drive on the fairway. Beware of trees both right and left, with out of bounds waiting for a big pull left. A solid drive and well-placed lay-up should leave a short iron into a generous and receptive green. The bigger hitters may reach this green in two leaving a very gettable eagle putt. Either way, the walk up the fairway is spectacular with the Dublin Mountains as the backdrop.

Only the wildest of tee shots will find trouble on this mid length par 3. A very difficult green will penalise shots from the wrong side of the pin and this hole often puts a premium on good lag putting.

The tee shot on the 9th is akin to hitting a green on a 200 meter par 3. Go too far left and you may catch the strategically placed bunkers or be cut off by trees. Going too far right and you can add several clubs to your second shot. If you are long you may be in trees and short makes a difficult shot over tall trees. A successful tee shot leaves a middle or short iron over a tree into a tricky green that slopes from the top left to bottom right. Miss it left or right and you will be left with a difficult chip or bunker shot.

The 10th hole is an interesting blend of both links and parkland features and inaccuracy can lead to a big score. Long and medium hitters should consider an iron or fairway wood for accuracy. A long wayward shot might find water or trees. A shot to the right side of the fairway leaves a good angle to a narrow green which slopes towards the water on the left.

A generous fairway awaits the 11th but wayward shots both left and right will leave you blocked for your second. With deep bunkers short and out of bounds at the back of this raised green, club selection is critical on this hole.

The Dublin Mountains set the scene for this medium length, uphill par 5. A tee shot hugging the left side of the fairway opens up the fairway for the second shot on this dog left right. A strategic second is a must as the out of bounds comes into play on the left with mature trees blocking out a clear path to the green for long hitters. Bunkers surround this generous green but good work early in the hole can lead to a good birdie chance.

The elevated tee box at the 13th gives a fantastic panoramic view of the mountainside. It also reveals a postage stamp green with testing undulations that will test even the steadiest putter. An accurate tee shot will set up a birdie chance, while going short or long leaves a tricky bunker or chip shot onto a quick green.

This par 4 has teeth with a tunnel like tee shot leading to a narrow fairway surrounded by trees running down both sides. An accurate drive is rewarded with a middle to short iron into a green which slopes severely from front right to back left. Deep bunkers surround the green. Beautiful views of Dublin City set the scene behind the green, but a word to the wise: Dont miss left!

The shortest par 4 on the course, this hole can entice the longer hitters to try to chase a ball onto the green. Leak it right and you will be in the trees. Too long left leaves you a tricky chip to a narrow green sloping away from you. A two hundred meter drive to the middle of the fairway leaves a short iron to a long green sloping left to right. A good birdie opportunity that can lead to disaster for the overzealous.

The blind tee shot on the 16th can be intimidating but anything on the fairway will leave a short to middle iron to a receptive green. The approach shot is critical as the green is bunkered short and long with over hit shots in danger of running out of play. Quick tip: Sneak a peek at the pin position on the 17th green while on the 16th fairway!

The toughest par 3 on the course heading back uphill towards the mountains. A long iron or wood is often required to hit a narrow green that slopes from back to front. Short shots can leave you in the bunker or worse, chipping over it. Go too long and you are left with a treacherous chip or putt back down this hill. A par here is an achievement!

A panoramic view of Dublin City is the back drop for this semi blind tee shot down the hill on this magnificent finishing hole. Leak a tee shot right and you are blocked out by trees and hedges. Go left and you face a nerve racking second shot over the out of bounds. An ideal drive down the right side of the fairway will give you a view of this large green that gently slopes from left to right. Bunkers guard it left and right but a shot to the middle of the green will give you a chance for birdie. A better finishing hole in Dublin will be hard to find!
