As part of our ongoing work around sustainability, Edmondstown recently completed an Ecology Audit through Golf Ireland’s Sustainable Golf programme. The audit looked at the habitats and wildlife already present across the course, as well as opportunities to enhance biodiversity in a way that works alongside the day-to-day management and enjoyment of the golf course.
The report highlighted a number of areas of real value already on the course, including our pond and wetland areas, hedgerows, scrub, areas of meadow and woodland. The pond in particular was recognised as an important habitat for waterfowl, amphibians and invertebrates. The survey also recorded 17 bird species during the visit, alongside evidence or suitable habitat for species including bats, badgers, frogs and newts.
There are also a number of opportunities for the club to build on this over time. Some of the main recommendations include:
- developing a longer-term woodland management plan, including gradually replacing some non-native conifers with native species;
- creating and improving meadow areas around the course;
- protecting and enhancing the pond and wetland areas, including suitable buffer zones;
- managing invasive species such as Cherry Laurel and Rhododendron
- retaining deadwood and creating habitat piles where appropriate;
- introducing bird and bat boxes;
- continuing to monitor wildlife and plant species across the course; and
- involving members and the wider community through initiatives such as biodiversity walks, talks or recording events.
The audit is very much a starting point, rather than a final plan, and will help guide how we approach biodiversity and environmental management at Edmondstown in the years ahead.
