It is with the deepest regret we announce the passing of Hon Life President Stanley Handelman, just a few weeks short of his 100th birthday.
As a mark of respect for the only remaining founder member of the club, the course and clubhouse will closed all day this Sunday 13th January.
His funeral will take place this Sunday 13th January at 11.30am in Dolphin’s Barn Jewish Cemetery.
Stanley has been part of Edmondstown Golf Club from its foundation in 1944. During his time here he held variety of roles including Hon. Secretary, Captain, President and finally Hon Life President to name but a few. He was also an avid competitor and his name features on many of the cups in the trophy cabinet he later donated. Stanley has made a lasting impact on the Club and his legacy will be not be forgotten.
His welcoming message in Portrait of a Golf Club, Edmondstown Golf Club in 2013 reflected his genuine love for this great club;
“It is truly amazing that what began as an idea in the hands of a few determined golf enthusiasts has now matured into a great golf Club. I was fortunate to be involved when the Club was founded. It was wartime and our facilities were modest in the extreme. We had none of today’s mod cons; if we wanted a shower we just waited for the rain!
I have been fortunate to see the marvellous progress of the Club growing from 9 to 13 to 15 and finally to the full 18 holes. These developments could not have taken place without the dedicated and unselfish work of the members.
It is the fine members and Club spirit that I am so proud of today and I know the future of the Club is in safe hands and reflects on the ideals of the founders.”
May he rest in peace.
